Official Opening!

Who: All the lovely test visitors of Jurassic Park and your very own host John Hammond!
When: July 21st in the morning hours after the first helicopters with guests arrive
Where: All over the safe area - check the subheaders for specific location options or make your own subheader if something you'd like is not yet included!
What: Getting settled! Hammond holds a welcome speech and you can get a tour through the Visitor Center. Once that is done, why don't you choose a room or check out the exhibits and café? A new world of wonders awaits and you're just getting started!

It's a beautiful but slightly nebulous day on Isla Nublar. You have arrived this morning and didn't get much of a chance to check out the place yet. Still, one thing is clear... Dinosaurs are a new one. That herd of brachiosaurs you spotted walking in the distance is pretty impressive.

This is a mingle-log that you can use to tag around with as many people as you want. Unless otherwise stated, it is assumed all comments here are fair game to reply to with all characters - they are all in close proximity to each other after all. If you have any specific preferences for your threads, state them in your subject line (e.g. if your thread is closed to a specific character or is set at a very specific time or if you don't want thread-jacking once a thread has started).

The log also gives a chance for characters to talk to John Hammond for a while - he might not be overly helpful, but go ahead and meet your host!

[Throughout the speech and the ride, a young woman's been eagerly filming the proceedings. Once they're released into the lobby, she whacks in a new battery and tape, adjusts her focus, and starts approaching people.]

Hi! My name's Sam, Sam Nishimura, and I'm making an independent documentary about this first visit to Jurassic Park. [She usually doesn't bother saying she's an indie, but she doesn't want anyone to hold back because they think she's InGen.] Would you mind sharing some of your first impressions?

[Her finger's ready on the record button, but she won't press it until her new interview subjects are ready and willing.]

[ A reporter? Well, now that Mikami thinks about it, it honestly isn't that surprising. This place was going to get a lot of media attention later on, so it's a good idea to get the first scope on it.

He's spoken on TV before, but it's always been on matters he was qualified to speak about, so he shakes his head as she approaches him. ]

I'm sorry, I don't have enough information yet to make a useful statement.

[Sam grins, though it's not unkindly.] I never said it had to be useful; I'm just discovering this place the same as you are. I want to capture the whole visitor experience, and that includes not having much information.

[ Ah right, not everything is all about the hard facts. ]

I'll still have to decline at this point. Even if it's just impressions, I'm not comfortable with my assumptions being recorded.

[Deliberately, Sam switches the camera off entirely, puts on the lens cap, and tucks it into her bag. Then she holds her hands out: Empty, no pen and notepad.] Nothing's being recorded.

[And really, she's not going to write it all down once she leaves his sight, either; she's just going to keep it in mind for further down the track.]

[It had been impossible to miss the filming going on during the opening proceedings given that there are so few of them here, and while it seems natural to have a reporter around, what are the odds of getting one out of pure randomization? Perhaps he's looking too deeply into it, perhaps his own history of dealing with certain reporters has made him biased, but Sam's presence is one that he's more aware of than the others. It comes as no surprise when she approaches.

Japanese-American is his guess, and again - the disproportionate population of people of Asian backgrounds makes him raise mental eyebrows as does the fact that she's referring to this excursion as a first. Externally at least, he seems pleasant about it. His response is in flawless English.
]

I'd be happy to, Ms. Nishimura, but I'd prefer that the conversation was off-record. [He extends his right hand in greeting.] Light Yagami. It's a pleasure.
cinematography: (that was perfect! let's do it again)

[Sam pouts a little at "off-record", but puts down the camera accordingly before shaking his hand.] I really appreciate it, Mr. Yagami, though of course I hope you can give me a quote later on, once we're better acquainted.

[She can appreciate that people don't necessarily want to open up to someone with a camera they just met, so she's hoping this is a rapport thing. Hell, considering that surname, maybe it's a language thing: She's met her share of ESL people who didn't want to speak English on record. Though this man's English is great, so that kind of worry's unwarranted.]
93312639: (Won't you come back home?)

[personal profile] 93312639 2014-07-31 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
[After shaking her hand firmly, he laughs and lets go.]

Even without the account of other guests, I'm sure that you must have a lot of material to work with already. Were you able to secure an interview with Mr. Hammond?

[Sam's bright and alert as she explains her project, genuinely passionate about it.] I'm much more interested in the visitor experience. At this stage, Mr. Hammond and the other resort employees would probably just be trying to make sure their company comes off in the best light, but I want to know the guests' side of the story, how people who weren't involved in development are taking this place.
93312639: (Yep that is indeed a flying pony)

[personal profile] 93312639 2014-08-01 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I see. [A brief pause and then:] To be honest, I'm astonished by what InGen has accomplished, but the road they've taken from research to commercial exploitation seems rather short.

Do they know how strong a fully grown dinosaur is? How did they calculate the correct voltage that would dissuade a dinosaur from touching the electrical fence without causing it lethal harm? And perhaps most importantly, what do they intend on doing next with this technology?

It all seems somewhat suspect.

[She nods as he speaks.] Those are all really good questions, and I'm glad someone's thinking about this kind of thing. [Because she hasn't, whoops.]
